French Polynesia - Huahine: BBQ on the motu on our last day & Tahiti - Papeete

On our last day in Huahine, Mike surfs Fare Left in the morning. It's a gorgeous sunny day, and a beautiful paddle out to the pass... amazing coral, fish, rays and turtles... for some really fun surf.
I take a break from taking photos to check out the Pearl Treehouse and some of the amazing black Tahitian pearls... generally a little above our budget unfortunately but we do find a nice black pearl on a leather string for Rachel's 25th birthday.

Thomas and Hannah, Laure and Nico's Polynesian friends, invite us all to a typical Tahitian BBQ on one of the islands ("motu" in Tahitian) where we snorkeled yesterday. We have breadfruit, taro, fish, lamb, all cooked in the traditional Tahitian oven, and an interesting desert made from starch, coconut milk and hot stones - it looks a little dubious but tastes a little like caramelized banana flambe!

Laure and Nico drop us off at the airport that afternoon where we fly to Papeete to catch our flight to Auckland and then to Samoa. Our Couch Surfing host, Lenaik, a TV presenter, is picking us up from the airport, which is a bit of a relief since although we are traveling light, carrying a surfboard makes it a little harder to move around easily. We pick up a bottle of wine, some cheese and baguette and head to our home for the night. We meet Lenaik's son and his girlfriend as well as her Mum and Dad. We chat late into the evening whilst watching a program Lenaik narrated about a cultural event in the Marqueses Islands from which she has just returned. Her Mum has discovered Facebook and is loving exchanging ideas on the social network. Her Dad has had a stroke and can't speak, but enjoys his glass of wine nonetheless :)
