Vietnam – Hoi An, Day 5 / Hue, Day 1

It’s our last day in Hoi An… It seems there’s still so much to see!

We visit the old Tank Ky House and join the tour given by one the young girls living in the home (7th generation). The river apparently overflows each year, and last year they had 2 meters of water on the ground floor – it’s amazing how the teak wood survives so well – there seems to be no trace of a flood!
We also visit a gallery where the photographer took some pictures of the flood and it’s really stunning – at that time of year, people just seem to swap mopeds for boats.

Another place we look in appears to be a gallery with paintings until we realize that it’s all embroidery – really quite amazing work. The girls work from photographs and the works are very beautiful, with depth and shading – it takes about a month to finish a medium size piece.
We wander the streets a bit more, then say goodbye to Hoi An, as we head off to Hue this afternoon.

Our 4hr bus ride from Hoi An to Hue leaves at 1:30pm. We drive along the coast most of the way up to China Beach and Danang, and see numerous plots of beach front property earmarked for development – it’s really quite incredible – change is coming, and fast!  We also see quite a few stunning stadiums, which is a bit of a surprise.
Once in Hue, we take a taxi to Amigo Hotel – one of the cheapest places we’ve stayed so far:  $16 per night – we have to make up for our splurge at Halong Bay! The hotel is actually very nice and perfectly located next to the restaurants and galleries, and across the bridge from The Citadel.

We get settled in, and then venture out to La Carambole run by a Vietnamese woman and her French husband. Mike’s not feeling adventurous, so I thought this would be a perfect compromise – he can have French food and I can try some new Vietnamese dishes ;)
