Fiji - Nacula Island: village visit

Since we'll be leaving Nacula Island tomorrow, we decide to go for a village visit. There are many breadfruit trees and several churches and an incredible number of houses, all well laid out so everyone has their own space. Amazingly there are 600 people in this village!

Playing cricket

The kids are playing cricket as we cross over to the meeting house to be introduced to the chief. He owns most of the islands in the northern Yasawas and is therefore an important man! He even owns Turtle island, which was bought by an excentric American in the 1970's who turned it into a luxury resort. During the coup in 2006, the Nacula islanders invaded Turtle Island, to lay claim to their land, and took the guests hostage - it was apparently all relativey peaceful though - they mostly drank a lot of kava it seems. We find out from Salome that those who invaded the island did go to prison
for several months though...

Hanging with the chief :)

We buy a few bracelets from the village ladies on the way out, very exciting for all the women
in our group!

Ana and Suzi still shopping as Sarah (on the right) tries to coax them away...
